Cigar Software

Quiet a spell since our last update.... it's been a busy quarter!

We found great software that has changed our lives, even as retailers, so it's sure to change yours. What's worse, is that this software has been around for 7 years, and to find it now makes me think, "What if I had tracked my cigars since 2003?". What a wealth of information I would have by now!

#1) Download "Cigar Briefcase" for free using this link. (Try this one for Macs...)
#2) Come see what we've added to the humidor at Goodfellas, and pick up a few sticks.
#3) Record your observations, and keep track of what you have in your humidor.
#4) Repeat step #2 when you're running low....

Hope this fine weather is treating you great! Make sure and fire up a good cigar while you're grilling out and relaxing after a long work day. Please let us know if there's anything you're looking for!

Long Ash....

Kenny gets my kudos for his long ash in this pic, which I had to share.  He's smoking a Perdomo P2 with a natural wrapper.  I told ya you'd like that smoke!  It says a lot about the build and integrity of a cigar when you can smoke it (and tilt it horizontally.... yes, I saw him do it) to where it is 80% ash.

As Cigar Dave might say... "Long ashes to ya brother".

Update...

Sorry for not updating in the last couple weeks...  Please continue to join us on Cigar Nights on Monday nights.  We are going to continue to run the Rocky Patel deal listed below until we run out of Sungrown Torpedos.... and this time you can buy ANY 3 Rocky Patels.  Once you've met that requirement, you will get a Rocky Patel Sungrown Torpedo (almost a $9 value) for free.

Keep checking the site.  Hopefully we will get some reps in this summer to offer deals through us and be on site to answer questions and smoke cigars with us.  It will be a great opportunity to get great cigars at a great price, and you're pretty much guaranteed a good turn out.  New to the humidor this week are two new sizes of the Savinelli 2005 Special Selection.  If you haven't tried this cigar yet you're missing out.  The AVERAGE score for every size of this cigar is in the 90's (Cigar Aficionado).  We are still waiting on the Casa Magna's and our backordered Torano Reserva Decandencias.  When the Casa Magnas arrive we will offer a one week deal on them to make sure everybody gets a taste of the 2008 #1 cigar of the year.  We're not worried about how well they'll sell, they sell themselves.  We're worried more about keeping them in stock!

I've had tons of requests for the Oliva Bundles. so please be patient.  I will have some coming to us this week and will stock as by the time the weekend is here depending on how quick Oliva decides to ship.  Thanks for your continued loyalty to the shop, and please contact us if there is anything we can do for you at all!  If you have requests for product that we do not currently have stocked, do not hesitate to let me know at matt@goodfellaspipeandcigar.com.

This might interest you...

I figured a cool post depicting the actual rolling of a cigar would be a good addition to the site today. In this particular video, the cigar roller (or "Torcedor" as they are called) is rolling a CAO America. In case you have not seen or smoked this cigar, it is a pretty good stick with a barber pole wrapper that includes Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro outside of Connecticut Shade. The filler, as you can see, is already rolled and pressed inside the binder. The roller in this video is only applying the outer wrapper, which is 70% of the taste of the cigar. How they grow, blend and pair the tobaccos from different regions and where the tobacco is used in the cigar determines what the outcome will be as far as taste. Keep in mind, this is a very tough thing to do, and it takes a very experienced roller to roll a torpedo. It gets tougher as the size of the cigar gets larger and longer, and when shapes are implemented such as on a figurado. The fact that this lady rolls this one in 2 minutes is impressive to me... and she probably slowed it down because of the video!

Annual Spring Outdoor Tasting and Tent Sale

Saturday, April 18th from 1:00pm to 5:30pm, we will be joining "Tastings Wine and Beer" for their annual "Spring Outdoor Tasting and Tent Sale". We set up at this event and the fall equivalent twice a year, and we always have fun!! It's a lot of work to set up an outdoor smoking lounge, taste wine, and listen to blues all day.

Of course we'll have a table with a decent selection of cigars set up... and as always we'll have the team there to put you on the right stick! Unfortunately, due to the transportation space, we will not be providing much pipe tobacco this year, but don't worry, we'll keep a couple ounces on hand for those of you that need to fill a bowl. Traditionally, tasters wander over and pick out cigars anyways... so we're not worried about a good turnout! PLEASE come join us tomorrow! We will set up a bit early, and we'll be there for the whole event. Tastings is THE place to find wines, both rare and common. Everything inside the store there will be 10% off and there will be great door prizes every hour, on the hour. You can check out the details here....

Tastings is located at 312 E. Center Street in Lexington and is super easy to get to... Come enjoy the 75 degree weather with us, some amazing beverages, and a good smoke!! (not to mention, we usually crank up some good blues too....)

Championship Smoke...

Choose a good cigar, especially if you're a UNC fan. Tonight might be huge! Come join us from 6:30pm until the end of the NCAA Championship game as we meet at Monkeez Brew and set fire to some premium tobacco...

Don't forget that we've usually have some card games going on and free WIFI if you actually manage to get bored. We have added cigars to the humidor including Habano and Connecticut NUBS, the Casa Torano Maduro, and Perdomo 2's. We have more on the way as we try to get our orders in before the different manufacturers raise their prices due to SCHIP.

We hope to see you at Monkeez Brew TONIGHT!! Bring your friends.... we really want to fill up the shop tonight with basketball fans!!

CHANGES.....

Hope all is well. Don't forget about our cigar night tonight, it has become quite a popular event! Not to mention, if you want cigars... try to buy the ones that are already stocked. Anything I order after April 1st will involve new pricing because of the SCHIP (about .35 cents per stick higher).

This post is to inform you all that we are 99% sure that we will change cigar night to Monday nights, starting next week, March 31st. I have asked customers the last two weeks, and everyone doesn't seem to mind the change. It seems as though we'll actually have more once the change is made.

Come grab you a smoke and join us.... we have a lot of fun!

Monday, March 9, 2009

This is a reminder post.... for several reasons.

As many of you already know, the SCHIP tax will soon be imposed beginning in April. From April on, you will see cigar prices raise .35 cents per cigar. This doesn't seem like much (especially considering what they were going to raise it to before IPCRA stepped in), but it really adds up. Come get your cigars in the month of March to completely avoid this tax. If you need something specifically, ask us to order it. You won't have to pay shipping charges, and you'll still get the same low price you're used to. If you have a request for cigars that you do not see in our humidor or that we are out of stock on.... please send a request or reminder to matt@goodfellaspipeandcigar.com.

Don't forget Cigar Night, every Tuesday night at Monkeez Brew!! So far, it has been a huge hit with the shop filling up every week with men (and a woman or two) sitting around playing cards, drinking coffee, watching the huge plasma TV, and smoking cigars. Use the tool here on our site to find directions and come join us every Tuesday from 6:30pm to 9:00pm....

The shop stays open later on these nights to allow access to the humidor. We look forward to seeing you!

HUGE NEWS!!

That's right.... the moment we've all been waiting for.  We've mentioned many times about how necessary is it for us to have a smoking lounge.  It's been difficult because of both the economy, and space at the store to do so.  We've finally made arrangements to reserve Monkeez Brew, the coffee shop we're located behind, for a Cigar night every Tuesday night!

Please keep in mind, Monkeez Brew is a very relaxing atmosphere stretching about 2000 square feet with newspapers, free WIFI, and a 52" plasma TV we can watch anything we want on.  There's nothing better than having a place to go smoke when it's 20 degrees outside.  Come join us at 32 E. Main Street on Tuesday nights.  We'll kick every night off around 6:30 pm... get there when you can.  We will make arrangements to keep the Shoppes open a little later (they normally close at 7pm), and I will make sure and see that you have access to the humidor if you get there before 8pm.  Come sit around and socialize with other men who need to relax as much as you do!  Again, here is what will be available to help you relax when you get there...

- Plasma TV
- Free WIFI (bring your laptop)
- Cigar Magazines
- Local newspapers
- Coffee drinks from lattes, to cappuccino, to espressos....
- Other guys wanting to talk about sports and cigars...

Please come by and see us... there is nowhere close by where you can enjoy a smoke in a heated atmosphere with a TV, trust me... I've looked!  We will begin next Tuesday, February 10th, and continue every Tuesday night.  No reservations are required.

Note:  No HGTV or Oprah will be watched, no cigarettes smoked, and sorry... you can't bring your flask of Johnny Walker Red.

**Note:  If you need directions to Monkeez Brew and Goodfellas, you may type in your address and use the tool here on our site.

2009 Update

First of all, Happy New Year!  For most of us, 2008 was a tough year and 2009 isn't looking so much better.  On the bright side though, premium tobacco is still around as a "relaxation endorser".

As some of you may know, the fear of the SCHIP expansion proposal is creeping up on us quick.  Just know this, IPCPR has been fighting hard for retailers like me and consumers like yourself.  Either way, there WILL be a tax increase on cigars and pipe tobacco.  Maybe it will be soon, or maybe they will drag it out a month or two.

My advice to consumers, come in and get what we have at the price it is now.  For the reasons above, we have decided to continue our sales of the samplers we put together.  These sticks are still marked down over 20%, and there are three samplers for three different smokers.  Don't worry, they're not throw-aways.  These are great smokes! Check the blog below...

Here's some great news for those who want something new to smoke during the Super Bowl.
This week we added the Joya De Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Belicoso and the Savinelli Special Selection 2005 Toro to the humidor.  As you can see by clicking the link, the Savinelli was recently listed on Cigar Afficionado's top 25 cigars of 2008.  Now's your chance to find an amazing smoke for under $7, come in and try one.  As for the Joya De Nicaragua, if you're a new cigar smoker, I suggest you stay away.  However, it burns even and delivers a spicy, chewy smoke with woody notes throughout, and has a finish packed with flavor.

Christmas Samplers

FYI.... The Christmas Samplers are complete!  There are only 25, so come get them while you can.  They are all dirt cheap... and we mean WAY below retail.  The variations we decided on are as follows:

The New Smoker- $19.95-  We chose what we consider the perfect smokes for the newer folks...

Macanudo Gold Duke of York:  Mild and Creamy cigar with notes of vanilla and wood.  Scored 89 in Cigar Aficionado.
Nat Sherman Metropolitan Maduro Angler:  Great burning stick.  Has notes of muted cocoa and licorice with a vanilla taste on the finish.
Casa Toraño Robusto:  Mild smoke with a beautiful Ecuadorian wrapper and woody finish.
Hoyo de Tradición Toro:  A sweeter cigar with toasty cedar notes.  Floral and earthy hints fall into a perfect creamy finish.  Scored 90 in the latest issue of Cigar Aficionado.

(And get a double-blade cutter with this sampler!!!)

Iron Man- $27.95-  For the experienced smoker only!!!  We chose four of our favorite full-bodied smokes packed with flavor and and aged tobaccos.

The Edge Maduro Toro: An oily cigar with a hearty taste of hickory wood.  The finish is full of coffee and an earthy spice.
Cohiba Black Corona:  A strong solid core of anise and licorice.  Carries coffee notes and has a toasty finish.  Scored 88 in Cigar Aficionado.
Padilla Miami 8/11 Robusto:  Oily and sweet packing a punch full of coffee beans, earth, and spice.  Scored 92 in Cigar Aficionado.
La Flor Dominicana Chisel Maduro:  Dark and oily, giving off amazing aromas as it burns.  Sweet leather, cream, and spice build to an amazing long finish.  Scored 91 in Cigar Aficionado.

The Elite Sampler- $38.95- We've picked out our favorite elite cigars, put them in a bag, and cut the price down to crazy. This one is pure enjoyment for seasoned smokers... Enjoy.

Don Pepin Garcia Serie JJ Torpedo:  One of Matt's very favorites, by his favorite maker in the business.  Enough said...
Savinelli Special Nicaraguan Reserve 2004 Torpedo:  This sticks have a smokey hickory taste with hints of spice and cedar.  Medium bodied, and no longer available after ours are gone!
Coranado By La Flor Double Corona:  Balanced flavors of sweet cocoa, leather, and earth.  This smoke has a sweet cedary finish and has rated in the 90's and was Cigar Aficionado's #2 cigar of the year in 2006!
Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente Sun Grown Torpedo:  Smooth smoke with sweet cedar notes and hints of white pepper.  It's a Fuente, so you can expect a good burn and great experience from this sungrown.
Oliva Masterblend Torpedo:  A woody, medium bodied Nicaraguan puro you are sure to love.  Expect a great burn, smooth draw, and pleasant finish from this elite stick.
Oliva Serie V Double Toro:  A tasty and complex cigar that wowed it's market with a score of 94 last year in the torpedo size.  This stick is woody and nutty with hints of coffee throughout.  You will keep coming back for this stick, but do it soon... they are always on backorder for this reason!

The Best Christmas Gifts!

This post is to inform you we are seriously re-stocked on our Perdomo Lot 23's. It's been our best selling cigar since we brought them in for good reason. The maduro Lot 23 and maduro Oliva Serie O are my personal favorite low budget cigars. This is not to mention, we already have better prices than the rest... so during this economic slump you can still enjoy your cigars!

Java's by Drew Estate will be re-stocked by the end of the week. We have stocked the Maduro, but will now also stock the Latte. These cigars have also moved very well. Feel free to enjoy any of these sticks with a cup of Monkeez Brew coffee just outside the shop. We have placed covered benches and tables there for this reason, so make yourself comfortable! When you do, tell the cashier to call one of us so we have an excuse to walk over and enjoy one with you.... (seriously)

Please keep in mind that we have several cigars available that were limited editions and are very hard to find. All of these are FANTASTIC sticks and will now be better with age. These are the Aurora Cien Anos, El Centurion by Don Pepin, and Kahlua (replaced by the Java). We also have Liberty 2007's that we will sell by the box only.

This week we will unveil what we consider "the ultimate man gift". We will be putting together Goodfellas Samplers at crazy prices that will last through NEW YEARS or until supplies last. Check the humidor this weekend... there will be two versions on display, one for the beginner and one for the experienced smoker. Hope your holiday's are great and we hope to see you soon!

Winter is coming!

Ahhh, the smell of winter looms in the air.  The crisp evening sunsets, sound of leaves falling over one another, and the feel of a good cigar in your hand.  These are just a few of the things we all enjoy about fall.

In honor of fall's arrival and the holidays right upon us, we want to invite you to stop by and grab some of your favorite rolled goods to enjoy during these picturesque evenings.  Just imagine yourself there on your porch or out in your backyard as the warm orange glow of a another day peacefully fades behind ever-emptying tree lines and billows of pleasant smoke as you puff away on that special cigar that makes you smile inside.   Sounds great doesn't it?  Makes you want to go light up right now!  Well, at least it makes me want to.

How about making 10 minutes of your week set aside to stop by Goodfellas on Main Street Thomasville to get something to fill out this picture.  With Perdomo cigars scorching up the market, we've added more sizes for you to try.  Grab one and then let us know your thoughts.

Comment on here about your experience with any Perdomo you've had recently.
